Ohhhh Christy.

If you walk into any Christy's of Cape Cod, you might think Christy Mihos already serves as Governor, Senator, or President. A massive portrait of his face adorns the wall of each store, ensuring that you know who owns the place. Christy likes people to know he exists.

This already familiar fact may become abundantly clear today if Mihos, as now expected, announces that he will abandon his campaign for Governor and dive into the campaign for United States Senate. On its face the move is not surprising. Charlie Baker's entry into the Gubernatorial race, and Mihos's run as an independent in 2006, all but ensured he would be marginalized by state Republicans next September. At the same time, Kerry Healey's decision not to run for the Senate meant that no deep-pocketed Republican would seek the nomination.

Christy certainly doesn't lack for funding, and can be expected to spend millions in any campaign effort. His entry is good news for Charlie Baker, and bad news for Scott Brown, who cannot possibly compete financially with Mihos. Still, given his background and past political experience, Christy is more naturally suited for a Gubernatorial campaign than a Senatorial election.  A challenging primary battle that receives press attention for nearly four months could help Brown strengthen his state-wide name recognition and campaign credentials.

At the very least, Christy's entry into the race makes the Republican side of things very interesting, and I'm sure his campaign ads will be great fodder for this site.

Pros:

  • Successful businessman - has millions of his own money to spend
  • Has run state-wide before
  • Base on Cape Cod and roots in the Brockton area - different base of support than Brown

Cons:

  • Dropped out of the Republican party and ran as independent in 2006
  • Garnered just 6.97% of the vote
  • Not supported by state republican hierarchy (to the extent there is one) although this could change if he abandoned his run against Baker
